Circumcision
is a male surgical procedure to partly or fully remove
the foreskin of the penis. Aside from religious and
cultural reasons for circumcision, men who suffer from
a tight foreskin, where it is painful to pull the skin
back from the glands, or a foreskin that produces pressure
on the glands when pulled back, may elect to have this
procedure.
How does it work?
Circumcision involves removing
the sleeve of foreskin that covers the penis head. A
surgeon will cut away the skin and then reattach the
lower foreskin to the glands so there is no foreskin
movement over the glands or penis head.
How long does surgery take?
Circumcision is a quick procedure
to perform, normally taking about half an hour to complete.
The patient will be under local anaesthetic only and
no overnight hospital stay is required.
What is the recovery time?
It is recommended that patients
refrain from sexual activity for at least three weeks
following surgery. Swelling and bruising will subside
within 2 3 days.
