Breast reduction
surgery (reduction mammoplasty) involves the removal
of fat, glandular tissue and skin from large breasts
to make them smaller and firmer. The areola, the dark
circular area around the nipple, can also be reduced
in size and repositioned to enhance the aesthetic outcome
of the procedure
Women who suffer back pain, neck pain and skeletal deformities
because of the weight of their large breasts, and women
who are self-conscious of their breast size, or have
one breast larger than the other, can elect to have
breast reduction surgery.
How
does it work?
The surgeon will make an incision
in the breast, normally a curved line following the
contour of the breast from the areola down to the lower
breast crease. Excess fat and glandular tissue are removed
from inside the breast, along with skin from the breast
itself. The amount of fat, tissue and skin removed is
dependent upon the final breast size that you have discussed
with your surgeon The areola and nipple is then repositioned
as desired, and the breast skin drawn into and around
the areola defining the new breast contour. Additionally,
liposuction below the armpit may also be used to withdraw
fat from the breast area.
How
long does surgery take?
Breast reduction surgery may take
2 - 3 hours to complete while the patient is under a
general anaesthetic. An overnight hospital stay will
be required.
