Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure used to enhance breast size by one or more bra cups. Enhancement is achieved by placing a silicone or salt-water solution implant behind the breast tissue or under the breast muscle. Breast augmentation is ideal for any woman who may consider their breasts to be too small, or for women who require breast reconstruction following breast related surgery such as a mastectomy.

How does it work?
Your surgeon will select the incision point to ensure minimal scarring. The most common incision points are the areola region (the dark area surrounding the nipple) the inframammary fold (the lower crease of your breast as it meets your chest) or your armpits. Your breast tissue (and muscle) is then lifted to create a pocket into which the implant is placed. The implant is positioned in the pocket to give the best aesthetic outcome. The incision is then sutured with self-absorbing stitches to minimize scarring. Finally, the breast is placed in a support bra for additional support and assisting the recovery process.

How long does surgery take?
Normally, both breast are enhanced in a surgical operation, which may take approximately 1 hour under general anaesthetic.

What is the recovery time?
Most people are able to return to work within 10 days of surgery

How long will it last?
The result from a breast augmentation is considered a permanent solution however it is recommended that patients consider changing the implant in the future if needed. Over time, the implants have a tendency to sag and ripple from wear and tear. In rare instances, breast capsulation – a harmless response by the body to protect itself from the implant can occur. If capsulation occurs it can result in an undesirable alteration to the breast shape. In this case a breast capsulectomy will be required.

What Kind of Implants Do You Use?
In most parts of the world the cohesive gel silicone implant is the implant of choice. The cohesive gel silicone, which fills the shell of the implant, is a solid gel that will not leak or deflate if the shell is ruptured. The cohesive gel implant has a very natural feel, which ensures that the implant does not look or feel differently from a natural breast tissue. There are many brands and shapes of cohesive gel implants available in the market. Make sure that you discuss your options with your surgeon.

Are there any side effects?
Side effects following surgery include temporary soreness and swelling of the breast, which may resolve itself within days. Nausea may occur as a result of being under general anaesthetic.
